Advanced options
A service charge is not always distributed as a gratuity. Check the receipt or venue policy before treating it as tip.
Assumptions
- The default setup tips on the subtotal before tax. Switch to subtotal plus tax in advanced options when needed.
- Displaying USD ($) changes formatting only. It does not convert the receipt into another currency.
- Service charges and included gratuity are not always distributed to staff the same way. Check the receipt before treating them as tip.
Formula
Target tip = Tip base × Tip% / 100; Additional tip = max(0 Target tip - credited gratuity); Total = Subtotal + Tax + Included gratuity + Additional tip; Per person = Total / People \text{Total} = B + T + G + \text{Additional Tip} \text{Per Person} = \frac{\text{Total}}{n} - Choose whether the tip percentage applies to the pre-tax subtotal or subtotal plus tax.
- Optionally credit gratuity already printed on the receipt toward the target tip.
- Add subtotal, tax, included gratuity, and any additional tip, then apply the selected rounding rule.
- Divide the final total into equal shares.
Example
Worked example: 85 bill, 18% tip, 2 people
- 1 Tip = 85 × 0.18 = 15.3
- 2 Total = 85 + 15.3 = 100.3
- 3 Per person = 100.3 / 2 = 50.15
Total is 100.30 and each person pays 50.15.
How
- Enter the bill subtotal and choose a display currency.
- Choose or enter a tip percentage, then set the number of people.
- Use quick receipt scenarios for common solo, group, included-service, or rounded-split examples when helpful.
- Open advanced receipt options only when you need tax, included gratuity, tip-base, or rounding controls.
- Review the answer-first total, per-person amount, receipt metrics, and copy-ready summary.
Avoid
- Adding another full tip without checking whether gratuity is already included.
- Applying a pre-tax tipping convention to a total that already includes tax.
- Assuming a service charge is always distributed to staff as gratuity.
- Rounding each share independently without reconciling it with the final total.
FAQ
Can split count be 1?
Yes. That means the total is paid by one person.
Should I calculate the tip before or after tax?
Practices vary. The default uses the subtotal before tax, and the advanced options let you include tax in the tip base.
What if gratuity is already included?
Enter it under advanced receipt options. By default it counts toward your selected target, so the result shows only the additional amount needed.
How does rounding work?
You can leave exact values, round the whole total, or round each equal share. The itemized additional tip includes the resulting adjustment so every line still adds up.
Does changing currency convert the bill?
No. Currency selection changes number formatting and the symbol only; enter amounts already expressed in that currency.
