Calculation steps
- Savings = original price × 15%
- Sale price = original price − savings
Checkout assumption: optional tax is applied after all discounts. Taxability, coupon treatment, shipping, and rounding rules vary by jurisdiction and retailer.
Formula
Sale = Price × (1 - Discount% / 100); Stacked sale = Price × product of each remaining-rate factor; Original = Sale / (1 - Discount% / 100) \text{Stacked Sale} = P \times \prod_i \left(1 - \frac{d_i}{100}\right) \text{Original} = \frac{\text{Sale}}{1 - d/100} - For one percentage discount, multiply the original price by the percentage you still pay.
- For stacked discounts, apply each percentage to the remaining price instead of adding the rates.
- Reverse mode can find the effective discount from two prices or recover the original price from a sale price and rate.
- Optional sales tax is calculated on the price after all discounts.
Example
Worked example: stack 20% then 10% off 100
- 1 First discount: 100 x 0.80 = 80
- 2 Second discount: 80 x 0.90 = 72
- 3 Savings = 100 - 72 = 28, so the effective discount is 28%
You pay 72 and save 28; stacked 20% and 10% is not 30% off.
How
- Choose percent off, amount off, stacked, or reverse mode.
- Enter the visible price and discount values; stacked rates are applied sequentially.
- Optionally add sales tax after discounts and choose a display currency; decimal and comma-formatted inputs are supported.
- Review the sale price, savings, effective discount, pay percentage, and checkout total.
- Copy the main result or detailed report when you need to share the scenario.
Avoid
- Entering tax rate instead of discount rate.
- Adding stacked discount percentages instead of applying each rate to the remaining price.
- Treating the sale price before tax as the final checkout total.
- Assuming every retailer or jurisdiction applies coupons, tax, shipping, and rounding the same way.
FAQ
Can I use decimal percentages?
Yes. Decimal discount percentages are supported, and comma-formatted price inputs are accepted.
Does this include tax automatically?
Tax is off by default. Turn it on to estimate tax applied after all discounts; actual taxability and coupon rules vary.
Are 20% off and another 10% off equal to 30% off?
No. The second rate applies to the remaining price: 0.80 x 0.90 = 0.72, which is 28% off overall.
Can I find the original price or discount percentage?
Yes. Reverse mode finds the discount from original and sale prices, or finds the original from sale price and discount rate.
