Formula
Required final = (Target - Current x CurrentWeight) / FinalWeight; Weighted grade = sum(Score x Weight) / sum(Weight)
\bar{g}_w = \frac{\sum_i g_iw_i}{\sum_i w_i}
  • Compute weighted contribution of current grade.
  • Subtract from target overall grade.
  • Divide by final exam weight fraction.
  • For weighted coursework, add each score times its category weight and distinguish entered coverage from the full course.
Example

Worked example: current 84 at 70%, target 86, final 30%

  1. 1 Current contribution = 84 x 0.70 = 58.8
  2. 2 Needed from final = 86 - 58.8 = 27.2
  3. 3 Required final = 27.2/0.30 = 90.67

You need about 90.67% on the final exam.

How
  1. Choose Final score needed or Weighted grades.
  2. For a final target, enter your current grade, final exam weight, target overall grade, and realistic maximum final score.
  3. For weighted grades, add each category with its score and course weight.
  4. Review required score, course-point contribution, remaining weight, and validation guidance.
Avoid
  • Using weights as whole numbers in formula without percent conversion.
  • Setting final weight to zero.
  • Treating a weighted average across partial coursework as the final course grade.
  • Entering category weights that total more than 100%.
  • Expecting guaranteed outcome without considering grading policy details.
FAQ
Can required score exceed 100%?

Yes, and that usually means the target is not achievable with current weights.

Can required score be negative?

Yes, that means you already secured the target before final exam.

Do current and final weights need to sum to 100?

Yes in final-score mode. The tool derives current coursework weight as 100% minus the final exam weight.

What if weighted categories total less than 100%?

The tool shows your normalized average across entered work, course points earned, and the exact weight still ungraded or unentered.
