Formula
GPA = sum(grade points x credits) / sum(credits); weighted courses add profile-specific bonus points - Multiply each course grade point by its credits.
- Add all weighted grade points.
- Divide by total credits.
- For the weighted 5.0 profile, add 0.5 for Honors or 1.0 for AP/IB before multiplying by credits, capped at 5.0.
Example
Worked example: points 4.0, 3.7, 3.3 with credits 3, 4, 3
- 1 Weighted sum = 4.0x3 + 3.7x4 + 3.3x3 = 36.7
- 2 Total credits = 10
- 3 GPA = 36.7/10 = 3.67
The GPA is 3.67.
How
- Choose letter grades or direct grade points and select the grading profile used by your school.
- Enter each course, credit value, grade, and course level when using weighted 5.0 mode.
- Optionally include previous GPA and completed credits for a cumulative result.
- Set a target GPA and total-credit milestone to see the required future average.
Avoid
- Treating a 5.0 scale as a proportional rescaling of every letter grade.
- Assuming every school awards the same Honors or AP/IB bonus.
- Mixing weighted and unweighted prior GPA records.
- Assigning zero or negative credits.
FAQ
Can I use decimals in grade points?
Yes, decimal grade points are supported.
Do credits need to be integers?
Not strictly, but they must be positive numbers.
Is this cumulative GPA?
Yes. Enable previous GPA, enter completed credits, and the calculator combines prior quality points with the current term.
How does the weighted 5.0 profile work?
It uses the standard 4.0 letter base, then adds 0.5 for Honors or 1.0 for AP/IB courses, capped at 5.0. Confirm your school policy because weighting varies.
