Net duration equals elapsed time minus the entered break. Date mode resolves both local date-times in the selected IANA time zone before subtracting them.

Formula
Net duration = elapsed end instant - start instant - break time Symbol legend
| Symbol | Meaning | Unit | Copy |
|---|---|---|---|
T_{net} | Net duration after breaks | minutes | |
t_{start}, t_{end} | Resolved start and end instants | time | |
T_{break} | Unpaid or excluded break time | minutes |
- Clock mode converts both times to minutes and uses the selected same-day or next-day interval.
- Date mode resolves each local date-time in the selected IANA time zone before subtraction.
- Subtract the entered break from elapsed time to produce net duration.
Example
Worked example: 09:00 to 17:30 with a 30-minute break
- 1 Raw interval = 8 hours 30 minutes = 510 minutes
- 2 Break deduction = 30 minutes
- 3 Net duration = 480 minutes = 8 decimal hours
The net duration is 8 hours.
How
- Choose Clock times for a same-day or overnight interval, or Dates and times for a calendar range.
- Enter the start, end, and any unpaid break minutes.
- For date mode, select the time zone and choose an occurrence if a fall-back time happens twice.
- Read net duration, raw minutes, decimal hours, and exact conversions.
Avoid
- Leaving Same day selected for an overnight clock interval.
- Deducting a break that is longer than the raw interval.
- Subtracting local clock labels across a daylight-saving change instead of resolving the time zone.
- Choosing the wrong occurrence when a fall-back local time happens twice.
FAQ
Can this handle overnight durations?
Yes. In Clock times mode, choose Next day for an overnight interval.
Can it deduct lunch or other breaks?
Yes. Enter the total excluded break time in whole minutes; the result shows both raw and net duration.
Does date mode handle daylight saving time?
Yes. It resolves both local date-times in the selected IANA time zone, rejects nonexistent spring-forward times, and lets you choose between repeated fall-back occurrences.
Can I use this for payroll conversion?
Yes. Use the linked decimal-hours and hourly/salary conversion routes after computing net duration.
